A note sent to me by Colin Cherry:
Hello, some of you might remember
Gord Smith formerly (as I knew him and family) from 3 Coy
(210)Wksp WO2, went on to the rank of Major before retiring.
The note is self-remembering. Colin
Hi Colin: Step up to the bar and I'll
buy you a beer because 62 years ago on 17 Dec. 1942 I joined His
Majesty's Armed Forces at the tender age of 17. My pay was .70 cents
a day (or $21 dollars a month as Boy soldiers liked to say) My rank
was Boy and it wasn't until mid 1943 I became a Private at the age
of 17 1/2 with a huge pay increase to $ 1.20 per day. My enlistment
was in the RCOC (E) because there was no RCEME but in May we were
assembled on the Barriefield Parade Square and told we would
henceforth be called Craftsmen. Now out here in the boondocks there
is only one other ex-RCEME that I talked to briefly on the phone so
I'm celebrating with you. Have another beer. I can't because they
play hell with my prostate. So there you are. Thanks for joining me
in the celebration. Merry Christmas to you and Joan and to all those
you hold dear. Gord.
Letter from Peter Capel (LETE) dated Dec. 12th 2004Larry, I
am currently the keeper of the Land Engineering Test Establishment (now
defunct) database with almost 1,000 members. A lot of these members have
drifted off and it would be nice to update my database. We normally have
reunions once per year with a large one every two years. Perhaps we
could put a message on your site that any ex-members of LETE can call or
email me. I can be reached at Peter Capel, 3087 Gagne Road, Hammond
Ontario K0A 2A0 and my number is (613) 487-2125. I am in the Ot
tawa area. It would be also nice to keep in touch with former EME, LEME,
RCEME members through your site. Thank you for your consideration.
Peter Capel
